Christian Hogarth was born in 1790 in Channelkirk, Berwickshire, Scotland. She was one of ten children born to Robert Hogarth and his wife Mary Scott.

Christian's eldest brother George Hogarth was a Scottish lawyer, newspaper editor, music critic, and musicologist. He authored several books on opera and Victorian musical life in addition to contributing articles to various publications.

In 1781, she married James Ballantyne, printer and publisher to Sir Walter Scott.

Their son James Alexander Ballantyne was born 29 Dec 1816 in Edinburgh.

Christian died in Edinburgh in 1828 aged 37.
