General West was a farmer, businessman, and politician. He served the north in the Civil War, rising from Lieutenant Colonel to Colonel. He was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers after the war.[1]
Primary sources are needed for his life before 1849. There is a good description with some family history in a biographical dictionary.[2] The dictionary refers to 9 living children, three sons and six daughters, but does not name them.
F married Emma M. Rittenhouse on 21 June 1849 in Green, Wisconsin, United States.[3] They appear together in the 1850 census with first child Louisa (2/12, Wisconsin).
Francis was 24, born in New Hampshire.[4]
The child counted in the biographical dictionary but not appearing in 1870 seems to be Josephine, born 28 Dec 1872. She died 15 Aug 1876, and so was never recorded in a census.[6]
