Biography

Cloudesley Marsham was born in England.

Birth and Baptism

Cloudesley was was born on 30 Jan 1835 and baptised on 21 April of that same year at St John the Baptist Chapel at Merton College, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.^[1] He was the son of Robert Marsham and Janet Dewar.^[2] His father was a fellow at Merton College, at the University of Oxford from 1812 to 1826.^[3] In 1824 his father became Dean of Merton College, where in 1826 he became Warden, position he retained until his death in 1880.^[4]

Early Life

The 1841 Census lists Cloudesley, then 6 years old, living with his parents and siblings at Merton College, University of Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.^[5] The same happens with the 1851 Census, except that Cloudesley was 16 years old then.^[6]

Education and the Church

Cloudesley enrolled at Merton College, University of Oxford, England, in 1853, aged 18, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1857. He also received a Master of Arts in 1860 at the University of Oxford, England.^[7] Cloudesley became rector of Edgcott in 1861, where he remained until 1868. The 1861 Census listed him as D. Marsham, 26 years old, rector of Edgcott, Buckinghamshire, England. However he was listed as resident in Caversfield, about seven miles away from Edgcott, where he seemed to be living with his parents and possibly 9 servants.^[8] In 1868 he became vicar of Stoke Lyne, Oxfordshire, England. However, in the 1871 Census Cloudesley, then 36 years old, was still listed as living with his parents in Caversfield, Oxfordshire.^[9] And in the 1881 Census he was listed, already married, living in Stoke-Lyne, Oxfordshire, England and as the vicar of Stoke Lyne And Caversfield.^[10] In 1888 Cloudesley became rector of Harrietsham, Kent, England.^[11] The 1891 Census listed Cloudesley as head of his own household living with his wife in Harrietsham, Kent, England. He was listed then as a "Clerk in Holy Orders".^[12] In the 1911 Census Cloudesley was listed as a clergyman and still residing in Harrietsham, Kent, England. He was listed then with his second wife, Edith, and four servants.^[13]

Cricket

Cloudesley was a cricketer, like his brother Robert Henry Bullock Marsham. He played for Oxford University, for The Gentlemen and for the Buckinghamshire County Cricket Club among other teams. His sons Cloudesley Henry Bullock Marsham and Francis E. Bullock Marsham were also cricket players.^[14][15]

Marriage

Cloudesley married first Frances Penelope Marsham, daughter of George Marsham and Elizabeth Jones, in 1876 in Loose, Kent, England, United Kingdom.^[16] They were first cousins. He married second Edith Matilda Birch Reynardson, daughter of George Birch Reynardson and Julia Trollope, in 1897 in Paddington, Middlesex, England.^[17]

Claudesley and Frances had four children:

The marriage with Edith does not seem to have produced any children.

Death and Probate

Cloudesley passed away in 1915, probably in Kent, England, United Kingdom. His probate was dated 23 March 1915.^[25]
