Biography

Lewis Johnston Junior was born in about 1753 in Georgia, the son of Dr. Lewis Johnston of Georgia. He and his family were Loyalists. After the Revolution, he and his father were placed on the 1783 Loyalists banished from Georgia list.^[1] Lewis Jr first fled to East Florida along with his brother-in-law, John Woods, with 52 slaves between them. After the Spanish took control of Florida, they with their families and slaves left for Nassau in the Bahamas on 30, June 1784. Lewis received a total of 310 acres in several land grants from 1789-1790 in the Grays settlement, then on 1 December 1790 received another 180 acres in the Mortimers settlement. After his attempts to grow cotton failed, he and his wife Catherine sold 500 acres to his brother-in-law, John Martin, and, in 1802, took his family and slaves back to St Mary's, Georgia.^[2] He passed away after 1802.

For slaves, thirty-eight in number, from the Rocky Mount Plantation: April, York, Tony, Leaf, Boston, Boatswain, Philip, Cato, Sam, Burton, Charlton, Edinburgh, Bacchus, Ben; women: Binah, Kate, Nanny, Lydia, Cloe, Dinah, Pender, Beck, Dorah, Abigail, Jenny, Silvia; boys: Jack, Billey, Simon, Peter, Sally, Cuffy, Bob, Billey, Lewis; girls: Farley, Katy and Molly. Signed by Lewis Johnston via John Wood, his attorney and by John Wood for himself. Witnessed by Sip. Haven, Thomas Mertte (?) Alder. Recorded by Isaac Crews on 21 May 1807. ^[3]
• G 122-125: 21 November 1803. Deed of trust of negro slaves. John Wood and his wife, Laleah, grantors, of Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia to Robert MacKay and James Johnston, Jr., of Savannah, Chatham Country, Georgia. For slaves Sarah, Simon, Nancy, Dye, Charles, Margery, George, Cate and Justice. The following slaves are used in lieu of the above mentioned: Ben, Peter, Quash, Sue, Bess, Sophy, Hagar and Laliah, held in trust for Lewis Johnston, James Robertson and William Moss. Remainder slaves listed: Bob, Betty, Charles, Polly, Dorah and Lemon. ^[3]
