Biography

Avilda was born 3 March 1836 in New York, daughter of John Carr and Ann Ross.[1]

Avilda was apparently married first to a Mr. Maynard (or perhaps the person recording her 1854 marriage got her surname wrong).

On 15 August 1854, 28-year-old John Rhodes was married in Genesee County, Michigan to 18-year-old Avilda M. Maynard.[2] At the time of her marriage, Avilda Maynard was listed as being "of Waterford, Oakland County".[3] Their witnesses were Maria Rhodes and Jacob Shaffer.[3]

On 20 July 1860, John and Arvilla and their 5-year-old son Edward lived in Thetford, Genesee County, Michigan. John worked as a carpenter and joiner. He owned $600 in real estate and $200 in personal estate.[4]

Avilda was married circa 1878 to Eugene M. Embury.

On 21 June 1880, Eugene M. and Avilda Embury and their children Cora A., Caroline, and Arthur E.; a nephew Lewis R. Forsythe; and two other persons Joseph Cowan and Ruth Harris lived in Grand Blanc, Genesee County, Michigan. Eugene was a farmer, with Joseph helping him. Avilda was keeping house and Ruth was doing housework.[5]

In March 1896, Avilda was reported to be on "the sick list."[6]

On 15 June 1900, Eugene and Avilda Embury lived on Elizabeth Street in Fenton, Genesee County, Michigan. Avilda reported that she had been the mother of two children, with one living. Eugene was working as a drayman.[7]

In September 1904, "Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Embury, of West Branch, are visiting friends here" (in Grand Blanc).[8] In April 1905: "Mr. and Mrs. Dan Warren moved to Flint, Tuesday, where they will reside during the summer. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Embury, of West Branch, will live in their house during their absence" (in Grand Blanch).[9]

The couple has not been located on the 1910 census.

Eugene Caleb Embury died on 22 August 1910 in Fenton and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Holly, Oakland County, Michigan.[10]

Afterward, "Mrs. Eugene Embury left yesterday morning for West Branch, where she will reside with her daughter, Mrs. A. J. Pettis, for a few months.[11] In June 1912: "

In May 1911: "Mrs. Eugene Embury of West Branch, is visiting a few days in Fenton at the home of her son, Arthur Embury. Mrs. Embury is an old resident of Fenton and lived here until last August when her husband died suddenly and after his death, she went to West Branch, where she has since been making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Cora Pettis."[12]

In June 1912: "Mrs. Eugene Embury left West Branch last Saturday to visit friends in Bay City, after which she will go to Fenton to make her future home."[13]

In 1913, Avilda (widow Eugene) was boarding at 624 Church Street in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, Michigan.[14]

On 5 January 1920, 84-year-old Avila Embury was boarding with Elezar Pettis in Fenton, Genesee County, Michigan.[15]

On 29 April 1930, 94-year-old Avilda Emberry was living with her daughter Cora Pettis at 113 Rockwell Street in Fenton, Genesee County, Michigan. Cora owned her house, valued at $5,000 and had a radio. Cora worked as a librarian.[16]

Avilda died from an "irregular weak heart" on 30 August 1931 in Fenton, Genesee County, Michigan.[17][18] She is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Grand Blanc, Genesee County, Michigan.[19]

According to her son's employment records[20] his mother was Mrs Eugene Embury. This was the clue that allowed her to be traced.

Research Notes

Mary A. Maynard, age 14, is in the 1850 Census in Marengo, Calhoun County, Michigan. Recorded as born in Michigan, but parents Loren Maynard and Harriett Maynard, ages 48 and 43, are born in New York. Sister Sarah Maynard is 16, also born in Michigan.[21] Not an obvious match, but often a woman's first name and middle name will be found reversed in the records, so "Mary A." and "Arvilla M." possibly could both be the same person. Mary A Carr, age 14 , is in the 1850 Census in New York City, New York County, New York, United States. Recorded as born (unreadable but could be NY) with Jno Carr aged 30 born Ireland, and Peter Clark aged 24 born Ireland.[22]
