Research Notes
There is a lot of uncertainty about this family. Elizabeth may have married three times, Mary may have been a Soper, Lillie a Lapham and Helen a McKeague. Or not...
In chronological order - as best I can read the documents:
in 1850 Betsey Goodale,52, is living with David, 58, Emily, 2 & Joseph, 1(transcribed 7), Goodale in Southampton New York.[1]
in 1860 Elizabeth Lapham, 38, is living with Mary Soper, 12, Lilly Lapham, 11, and Betsey 62, Joseph, 17, & Emily Goodale, 18,[2]
In 1865 Betsey Goodale, 66, is living in Southampton with Joseph, 23, & his wife Lucilla, 19.[3]
In 1870 Elizabeth "Saphal", 45, is living in Brooklyn New York with Lillian, 16. and Helen, 7, "Saphal" Mary, 22, WIlliam, 26, and Joseph, 2, Gould.[4]
In 1875 "Ella Sophina, 70 ", listed as Mother, is living in Brooklyn with Mary, 29, (daughter) and Joseph, 7, (grandson) Gould and Sarah Sophina, 35 (aunt)[5] Ella & Mary are both listed as 'Widow'
In 1880 Mary Gould, 32, as Head, is living in Brooklyn with Joseph Gould, 12, (son) Helen McKeague, 17, (sister), Elizabeth McKeague, 56, (mother) and Betsey Goodale, 83 (grandmother). [6]
Mary Gould was born in New York State 1 Apr 1848 and died 27 Jul 1930 in Brooklyn. Her parents are listed as Charles 'Loper' (Soper?) and Elizabeth Goodall both born n New York.[7]
Obviously not all of this is 100%, but it does seem to more or less hang together.
