Biography

Eleanor was born circa 1507.

She was married to Philip Egerton, of Egerton and Oulton, in 1535.[1]

In 1 Elizabeth I [17 November, 1558-16 November, 1559], Philip Egerton of Olton, Cheshire, knight, and Eleanor, his wife, granted to Urian Brereton, knight, and Peter Moston, esq, lands, tenements, etc in Chester.[2]

Eleanor's husband, Philip Egerton, knight, died on on the feast of Kenelm the king and martyr, that is 17 July, 1563, and he was buried on the following Wednesday at Little Budworth, Cheshire.[3]

In 8 Elizabeth [17 November 1565-16 November 1566], Richard Porter of London, gent, made a grant relating to lands late of Philip Egerton, knight, to Peter Moston, esq, and Dame Eleanor Egeton, widow.[4]

Lady Elenora Egerton died on 3 November, 1567, and was buried on 6 November at Little Budworth, Cheshire.[3]

Research Notes

According to Sir Philip de Malpas Grey-Egerton, Bart, before the death of his father in 1535, Philip Egerton later Sir Philip, had been betrothed to Eleanor, daughter of Sir Randle Brereton, of Malpas, Knight Banneret, Chamberlain of Chester, and the marriage took place in 1535 a short time after Sir Randle's decease.[1]

However, this Eleanor could not have been the daughter of the chamberlain, unless he had two daughters named Eleanor, because she was already married to her second husband, Sir William Brereton: Between 1518 and 1529, a writ of Certiorari was issued in Cheshire; the plaintiffs were Richard Cardyff and Richard Lee; the defendant was Randolph Brereton, knight, chamberlain of the county palatine of Chester; the subject was action brought in Cheshire by William Brereton, knight, husband of Eleanor, executrix and late the wife of John Eggerton, and daughter of the said chamberlain, on a bond made by complainants with others to the said John at Wrinchill in Staffordshire.[5]
