Biography

Nancy Anna McConahy was born on 17 April 1846 in Princeton, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania to Laughlin McConahy and Sarah Copper [1] [2]. Nancy went by both Nancy and Anne throughout her lifetime, but in this biography, we will refer to her as “Nancy”. Nancy was the 5th child out 6 known children of Laughlin and Sarah McConahy. In 1850, Nancy was 4 years of age living with her parents and 5 siblings, Mariah, Thomas, Nathaniel, John, and Elizabeth in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania [3]. In 1860, the family including parents and all 6 children were still living on the family farm in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania [4]. Shortly after this census, the Civil War began, and Nancy’s brothers left to fight for the Union forces. Most likely Nancy had to help her family maintain the farm with her other sisters. In 1870, Nancy was 22 years of age living with her parents and her brother John and sister Elisabeth in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania [5].

On 1 January 1872, Nancy married John Lamb who had recently immigrated from Ireland to the United States [6] [2]. The union of the couple would produce 8 children with 6 living to adulthood. In 1880, Nancy, her husband John Lamb, and their first 3 children were living in Siverly, Venango County, Pennsylvania [7]. John’s occupation was listed as a “Laborer”. In 1889, the couple had their 8th child, Nathaniel Lamb who died at 1 week of age and in 1890, the couple’s son Thomas R. Lamb died at the age of 6 years. In the 1900 census, the couple were living on a farm which was free of mortgage in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania [2]. John was listed as a farmer and 5 of the couple’s children were living in the family home. In the census, Nancy listed that she had birthed 8 children and 5 were alive but it is unknown who the 1 child who died was. As mentioned above, the couple had lost 2 children in 1889-1890. Those listed in the home included: Laughlin, Marcella, Anna, John, and Etta. On 13 February 1907 John died from pneumonia that he contracted from Influenza that he had been battling for several months. [8]. Several years prior to his death on 4 August 1900 John had made his Will in which he left everything to his wife, Nancy Lamb [9].

Less than 1 year later on 29 December 1907, Nancy (McConahy) Lamb died from complications of her heart [1]. She must have known that she was in poor health because on 13 November 1907, Nancy had written her Will in which she had left her son John Bailey Lamb the farm and all her possessions [10]. to each of her daughters, Marcella, Anna Elizabeth, and Etta she left $800 for each to be paid by her son John by the second year after her death. According to the Will, her son Laughlin had already been given his inheritance. Nancy was buried on 31 December 1907 in St. Mary’s Cemetery in New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania next to her husband [1] [11]. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers John and Nathaniel and 3 of her children. She was survived by her 5 children Laughlin Patrick Lamb, Marcella (Lamb) O’Leary, Anna Elizabeth (Lamb) McCormick, John Baily Lamb, and Etta C. Lamb. She was also survived by her brother Thomas McConahy, and sister, Elizabeth (McConahy) Carlin.

Research Notes

The last name is McConahy but there are a few records that have the name spelled incorrectly including 1870 Census in which the family name was spelled McConaghy. However, tombstones and other census spell the family name as McConahy. There is an individual and his family who spell their last name as McConaghy who immigrated from Ireland years after Laughlin McConahy came to America.
