When Walter married his second wife, Emily Ann, she already had children. Their births were:

In each case, their mother’s maiden name was recorded as “LYS”. Emily Ann Lys was born in 1839 and her birth was registered in Stepney, Middlesex, England.^[20] Emily Ann Lys, 26, daughter of William Lys, married Robert Fossett, 35, son of William Thomas Fossett, on 21 Jul 1866 in Stepney, Middlesex.^[21] Robert petitioned for divorce in 1879, naming Ransome as correspondent..^[22] As Emily Ann Fossett, she married William Ranson in 1882 and their marriage was registered in Stepney.^[23]
