Biography

Colin was born on October 17, 1884.^[1] He was the son of David Ritcey and Amanda Lohnes. He was born and raised in Riverport, Lunenburg County. From the documentation found it appears that he travelled back and forth between Canada and the US a number of times. He married Evelyn Spearwater on June 18, 1910^[2] in Newton, Massachusetts. In May of 1910 just a few weeks before marriage, a document indicates his residence as Newton, Massachusetts. On the marriage document, Colin gives his address as Riverport, Nova Scotia and Evelyn gives hers as Newton, Massachusetts. Colin was a schooner Captain at that time. They reappear in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in the census in June 1911 living on Fox Street.^[3]

They then returned to the US as in February 1922 Colin filed a Declaration of Intention form to begin the process for US Naturalization and he stated that he arrived in New York on May 1, 1915.^[4] They both obviously returned to Nova Scotia as in the census of 1921^[5] they are living in Lunenburg. They apparently went back to the US shortly after as when he filed the Declaration of Intention in 1922, he stated they lived on Lexington Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. Presumably he did not complete the Naturalization process as the family is not found in the 1930 US census and the next we know is he is in Lunenburg again in 1944 when he applied for his birth registration and apparently they then remained here.

Colin passed away on September 28, 1962.^[6] Colin's death certificate states his occupation as retired sea captain which is true but it would seem that he apparently operated a business in Lunenburg, C.D. Ritcey and Son Limited, a furniture store, with his son Eugene. Eugene's obituary states that he was the proprietor of the business, obviously after his father's death.

Research Notes

Colin and Evelyn had six children - three boys, Eugene, Fenwick and Charles, and also three girls, Marguerite, Evelyn, and Phyllis according to Charles' biography.^[7] The boys are attached to this profile however nothing is known about the girls beyond a mention in the biography and in Charles' obituary.^[8] The girls do not appear in the 1921 census so would all have been born after that date. No profiles are created as their birth or death dates (if deceased) are not known.
