Biography

The little bit of information that is known about Jack (John?) Parkes was told to me by my mother and my Auntie Del.

All I know is that my grandmother Violet Howarth met Jack whilst working in Lithgow and that he was the love of her life. There has been no evidence that they were ever married. During their relationship she gave birth to a son in 1913. When WW1 broke out Jack headed off to war. During the war it seems that Jack must have gone home on leave because in 1915 Violet gives birth to a daughter. Violet never heard from Jack again. She was sent a letter from the war department stating that Jack was missing in action. However, she had been told by local returning soldiers that they had heard rumours that he had gone back to his wife and children in England.

Violet was devastated and now faced raising two children on her own.
