Joseph Ezekiel Alexander was born on February 6, 1837[1] in Hardin County, Tennesse.[2] Shortly after his birth, his father moved the family to Arkansas. In 1850, he lived in Jefferson, Carroll County.[3]
Before the war started, he lived with his sister Elizabeth and her family in Mill Creek Township, Netwon County, Arkansas. He farmed there to earn a living.[4] He married Sarah E. Jones in Arkansas around 1857.[5]
He enlisted in the Union Army on May 14, 1864 in Bellefonte, Boone County, Arkansas as a private. This was the same time his older brother David signed up for service. They both were assigned to 2nd Cavalry, Company I.[2] What motivated them to join the war so late may never be known. But before joining, rebel guerrillas attacked the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry near Richland Creek. The Confederates refused to take prisoners, and by the time fighting was over, at least forty men from the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry lay dead. It was no doubt that the lawless and marauding rebels attacking families in the country side forced many loyal to the Union to join and defend their homes. The unit he joined's primary job was to counter rebel guerrillas in the area. Toward the end of the war, the unit served out of state east of the Mississippi River in Tennessee.[6]
After the war, he lived in Marion, Christian County, Arkansas near the Kentan post office. He worked as a farm laborer to earn a living.[7]
Sometime before 1880, they moved to Texas. He lived in Erath County and farmed there to earn his living.[8] In 1900, he continued to live in Erath County in the town Alexander. He was a landlord and rented property to earn his living.[5]
He died on November 25, 1908 in Erath County, Texas. He was buried at Clairette Cemetery in Clairette, Erath County, Texas.[1]
