Johann Ferdinand Hollenkamp was born in the Kingdom of Hannover.

Johann Ferdinand Hollenkamp sive Fissmann was born on 24 October 1851, son of Gerd Henrich Hollenkamp, now Colon Fissmann and Anna Maria Adelheid (Korf) Hollenkamp, both residing in Ahausen.^[1][2] He was baptised on 27 October 1851 in St. Nikolaus Ankum.^[1] His godfather was Johann Ferdinand Tepe, a Kötter by profession in Rüssel.^[1] His baptismal witnesses were F. Bernhard Korf, residing in Rüssel, and Dina Ratermann, daughter of the Colonus in Ankum.^[1]

Johann Ferdinand was dismissed from Prussian citizenship, by approval of his father Colon Fißmann sive Hollenkamp with an attestation of the military "Kreis-Ersatz-Commission", to the United States of America on 2 April 1873.^[3]

As a 21-year-old, Ferdinand Hollenkamp left the German Empire via the port of Bremen onboard the ship Ohio and arrived on 8 November 1873 in Baltimore in the United States of America.^[4]
