Johann Ferdinand Hollenkamp sive Fissmann was born on 24 October 1851, son of Gerd Henrich Hollenkamp, now Colon Fissmann and Anna Maria Adelheid (Korf) Hollenkamp, both residing in Ahausen.[1][2] He was baptised on 27 October 1851 in St. Nikolaus Ankum.[1] His godfather was Johann Ferdinand Tepe, a Kötter by profession in Rüssel.[1] His baptismal witnesses were F. Bernhard Korf, residing in Rüssel, and Dina Ratermann, daughter of the Colonus in Ankum.[1]

Johann Ferdinand was dismissed from Prussian citizenship, by approval of his father Colon Fißmann sive Hollenkamp with an attestation of the military "Kreis-Ersatz-Commission", to the United States of America on 2 April 1873.[3]

As a 21-year-old, Ferdinand Hollenkamp left the German Empire via the port of Bremen onboard the ship Ohio and arrived on 8 November 1873 in Baltimore in the United States of America.[4]
