Biography

Augustus was born in 1842. He was the son of William Barker and Jeannette James. He was killed in 1863.

Captain Gus Barker enlisted in the New York Cavalry from Harvard in 1861. He was soon incapacitated by typhoid fever, but he survived and after a necessary period of recuperation rejoined his regiment. He was captured and incarcerated in Libby Prison. Allowed out "on parole" he went with a brother offcier to visit the confederate general Fitzhugh Lee. He was subsequently shot by guerillas and died close by, at the home of a man caled Freeman Harris.
