Her father was the (British) Governor of Madras between 1881 and 1886, and she was accordingly born in British India. As a young woman she returned to India to undertake missionary work there, but her own Christian faith perished during the First World War, after which she made her way back to England. She then studied and qualified as a psychoanalyst. When she was 75, her partner having become confined to her bed through arthritis, the two of them ended their own lives.
