Biography

John was born on 29 September 1883. [1] [2]

1890 Oklahoma and Indian Territory US Indian Census and Rolls Cherokee Census listed Lewis Dunback 61 white and adopted into the Cherokee Nation, Nancy Dunback 39 native Cherokee, Lewis Sanders 18 native Cherokee, Mary Dunback 14 native Cherokee, Henryetta Dunback 10 native Cherokee, John Dunback 6 native Cherokee and Louisa Dunback 18 native Cherokee. Lewis was a farmer that had 2 dwellings, 6 other structures, 3 farms with 80 acres of which 70 were under cultivation. Crops included 900 bushels of corn, 100 bushels of apples, 20 bushels of peaches, 80 bushels of turnips, 500 bushels of Irish potatoes, 20 bushels of sweet potatoes, 27000 pounds of cotton seed and 20 bales of cotton. Farms had 100 fruit trees, 150 hogs, 60 cattle, 3 horses and 100 domestic fowl. [9]

1900 Federal Census of Township 14 Cherokee Nation Indian Territory listed head of household Frank Zigler 39 born in Germany October 1860, wife Nancy Zigler 48 born June 1851 in the Indian Territory and whose father was born in Scotland and her mother in Tennessee, Henry Etta Dambach 20 born August 1879 in Indian Territory and whose father was born in Germany and mother was born in the Indian Territory, John Damback 16 a farm laborer born September 1883 in the Indian Territory and whose father was born in Germany and mother was born in the Indian Territory and Effie Damback 8 born in February 1892 in the Indian Territory and whose father was born in Germany and mother was born in the Indian Territory. Nancy, Henry Etta, John and Effie were all listed as Indians, All could read, wriote and speak English except Effie who couldn't read or write. Nancy had 10 children of which 4 were alive in 1900. John aged 19 was enrolled as a Native American by blood on 1 September 1902. He was listed as 1/8 Cherokee. Other names on the list were Nancy Dunback aged 51 and 1/4 Cherokee and Effie Dunback aged 11 and 1/8 Cherokee. [2]

John Dunback of Braggs in the Indian Territory aged 19 married Odessa Ann Gilstrap aged 16 also of Braggs on 23 February 1903. [3]

1910 Federal Census for McLain Muskogee Oklahoma listed John Dunback 26 a farmer doing general farming who rented his farm and had been married for 7 years, wife Dessie Dunback 23 who also had been married 7 years and daughter Effie Dunback aged 3. John was listed as Indian married once born in Oklahoma. His father was born in Germany and his mother was born in Oklahoma. Dessie was listed as white married once born in Texas and had two children one of whom was still living in 1910. Her father was born in Iowa and her mother was born in Texas. [7]

John Dunback aged 30 living in Braggs Oklahoma married Viola Copeland aged 17 also living in Braggs on 4 December 1913 in Sebastion County Arkansas. [4]

12 September 1918 John Dunback registered for the draft as living in Braggs Muskogee Oklahoma and as an American Indian. His nearest relative was Viola Dunback. He was listed as slender and medium height with blue eyes and dark hair. His occupation was farming. [5]

1920 Federal Census of Brewer Muskogee Oklahoma listed John Dunback 36 a farmer doing general farming born in Oklahoma whose father was listed as born in France and spoke French, wife Viola Dunback 23 who was born in Missouri and daughter Mary Dunback 1 who was born in Oklahoma. All were listed as white. [8]

He passed away in January 1928 in Oklahoma and was buried in the Greenleaf Cemetery in Tahlequah Cherokee Oklahoma.[1]
