Charles Wesley Turnbull was born in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands on February 6, 1935. He was the son ofJohn Wesley Turnbull and Ruth Ann Eliza Skelton.
Charles grew up in a humble family and received his early education in the local schools. His passion for education led him to pursue higher studies, and he earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of the Virgin Islands and later obtained a Master's degree in Public Administration from Harvard University.
Charles' dedication to education and community service was evident throughout his career. He worked as a teacher, principal, and administrator in the Virgin Islands Department of Education for many years. His commitment to improving the educational system in the Virgin Islands was unwavering, and he played a significant role in advancing educational opportunities for the island's residents.
Charles Wesley Turnbull entered the political arena as a member of the Democratic Party. In 1999, he was elected as the Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, a position he held until 2007. As Governor, Turnbull focused on a wide range of issues, including economic development, healthcare, and infrastructure improvements. He also worked to strengthen the relationship between the U.S. Virgin Islands and the federal government.
He passed away on July 3, 2022, in Washington D.C.
