Biography

Martha Jane Giesler was born around 1851, the daughter of Jacob and Matilda (King) Giesler, early settlers in the area of Maries County, which was then part of Crawford County.

In 1871, she married Hargus Washington Hart with five children who reached adulthood: three sons—Joseph, Charles, and Walter—and two daughters, Frankie and Minnie.

Martha passed away on August 1, 1932, in Vichy and was laid to rest in Wentzel Cemetery. Her obituary and gravestone state her birth date as March 1, 1849; however, this is contradicted by the 1850 Census, which does not list her as a member of her parents' household.

Instead, the youngest child recorded is Louisa Matilda Giesler. Supporting this, the 1900 Census records Martha's age as 48, with a birth date in 1851, aligning with her first census appearance in 1860 as a nine-year-old.
