Juanita Bessie Piper Heggaton was born in 1879 in Encounter Bay, South Australia (Australia). She was the younger surviving daughter of William Heggaton and Mary Dufty. [1] About 1866 the family had settled at Encounter Bay, about 100 kilometres (62 miles) south of Adelaide on the south coast at the mouth of the Murray River. Encounter Bay was named by Matthew Flinders in 1802 as the place he met French explorer Nicolas Baudin, and was well known as the site of whaling stations (up to 1855), commercial fishing, and today for the city of Victor Harbor.
Juanita married Walter Shier in 1912 in Adelaide. [2]
