Samuel Graham was born about 1846 in County Armagh, Ireland. He was the son of Samuel Graham, an agricultural labourer, and Elizabeth McInally. Samuel’s parents had at least nine children.
Birth location
Samuel's parents were married in County Armagh, Ireland. Records for his mother’s siblings Helen (McInally) Devine and John McInally show that they were born in County Armagh. They also married in County Armagh. It seems likely that Samuel and his siblings were born in County Armagh.
The Famine Years (1845-1852)
Samuel's early life coincided with the years of the Irish Potato Famine (1845-1852). The famine was likely the reason why his parents decided to leave Ireland and take their children elsewhere.
Scotland
Samuel's parents moved the family from Ireland to Scotland in about 1850. They appear in the 1851 Scotland Census and it shows that all their children were born in Ireland (the last in 1849). His mother's siblings also moved to Scotland with their families: Helen (McInally) Devine by 1845, John McInally by 1857 and Catherine (McInally) Kinnon by 1871 (these were Samuel's aunts and uncles and their families).
The Graham family settled near Cathcart in Renfrew County, on the south side of Glasgow, south of the River Clyde. His mother's siblings also lived in Cathcart or the nearby town of Pollokshaws in the parish of Eastwood. The 1851 and 1861 Scotland Census show the Graham family living in a home in "Newlands", an area of farmland about halfway between Cathcart and Pollokshaws. In 1851, Samuel was listed as age 5, but did not yet appear to be attending school. His father was working as a labourer in a quarry, as were his older brothers John and William. [1] By the 1861 Scotland Census, Samuel, age 15, was working as a "cotton print field worker" (as was his younger sister Sarah). His three older sisters were also all working in a cotton mill. His father was working as an agricultural labourer. [2]
Samuel's sister Rachel had married in 1852, but her husband seems to have left and Rachel and her son returned to live with her parents by 1861. In the decade that followed, Samuel's brothers William Graham and James Graham as well as her sister Jane Graham all married and left home to start their own families. James would emigrate to New Zealand and his sister Jane would eventually return to Ireland. His sister Elizabeth Graham also had a son out of marriage.
Samuel's mother died from chronic bronchitis a few days after Christmas in 1867. At the time of her death, the Graham family was living at 79/81 Main Street in Pollokshaws.
For the 1871 Scotland Census, Samuel, age 24, was living with his widowed father at 79/81 Main Street in Pollokshaws. Three of his adult sisters and two of their children were also still living at home. Samuel was working as a vanman. His father was working as a farm labourer. [3]
Marriage
On 15 October 1872, Samuel, age 24, a bread van driver from 75 Main Street, Pollokshaws, married Mary Baillie, age 27, a domestic servant from 5 Pollok Road, Shawland, Eastwood. They were wed at 17 Elderslie Street, Glasgow in the Parish of Anderston by John Wilson of the United Presbyterian Church, Breadalbane Street, after banns according to the forms of the United Presbyterian Church. Samuel's parents were listed as Samuel Graham, a farm servant, and the late Elizabeth McInally. Mary's parents were listed as the late John Baillie, a river pilot, and Margaret Crawford, also deceased. Their witnesses were James Thomson and Annie Crawford. [4] [5]
Samuel and Mary would have four children:
The 1881 Scotland Census finds Samuel, his wife Mary and their children, living on Pollokshaws Road in the parish of Cathcart. Samuel was working as a bread van man. [7] Two weeks after the census, Samuel's father died from heart disease at his home in the "Newlands Cottages" in Cathcart. The death record shows Samuel as the informant. It shows that Samuel was from Crossmyloof, Cathcart. Pollokshaws Road runs through Crossmyloof in the parish of Cathcart.
Samuel and Mary's third daughter Mary Muir Graham died at age three in 1883. Their son Muir Crawford Graham, born in 1885, was likely given the name "Muir" in her honour. The origin of the name Muir is not clear (no family name yet found in grandparents).
For the 1891 Scotland Census, Samuel, his wife and their children were living at 85 Budhill Street in Shettleston, a district in the eastern part of Glasgow (likely Budhill Avenue, Glasgow, today). Samuel was working as a wine and spirit merchant. [8]
By the 1901 Scotland Census, Samuel and his wife Mary were living in "Stanley Cottage", 15 Main Street, Tollcross in Shettleston (likely Tollcross Road, Glasgow, today). Samuel was working as a publican (pub owner/manager). Their 15-year-old son Muir Graham was a patient at the Lightburn Infectious Diseases Hospital for the 1901 census. Perhaps he was a patient for a while (e.g., in quarantine). His occupation was listed as a shipping clerk. Their daughters were not living with the family. [9]
Death
Samuel passed away at age 57 in 1903. His death was registered in Shettleston, Glasgow. [10] Samuel was survived by his wife and three children.
Probate
Samuel's rather substantial estate passed probate in June 1904:
GRAHAM, Samuel, Wine and Spirit Merchant, 15 Main Street, Tollcross, and residing at Stanley Cottage there, died 23 October 1903, at Tollcross, testate. Confirmation granted at Glasgow, 13 June, to Mary Baillie or Graham, Stanley Cottage aforesaid, his widow, John Crawford, Wood Carver, 16 Houldsworth Street, Glasgow, Alexander Foster, Warehouseman, Caenlochan, Cambuslang, and Peter Irving, Clerk, 788 London Road, Glasgow, Executors nominated in Will or Deed, dated 19 August 1898, and Deed of Assumption, dated 4 February 1904, and recorded in Court Books of Commissariot of Lanark, 1 June 1904. Value of Estate, £1472, 6s, 2d. [11]
£1,472 in 1904 would have the equivalent buying power as £228,991 in 2023. An additional £62 was added to estate a year later. [12]
Samuel was mentioned in his son Muir Crawford Graham's marriage to Dorothy Helena Farrav on 22 February 1917 in Suva, Central, Fiji. [13]
