Biography

Charles Hughes was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to the Colony of New South Wales

Charles was born about 1797.

He was a tailor, who was convicted at Middlesex in October 1817 of street robbery (larceny from a person) [1] and transported for life to the Colony of New South Wales, arriving on the 'Neptune' on 5 May 1818. [2]

On 2 October 1821, Charles married Sarah Payten in St Philips Church of England, Sydney. [3][4] When he requested permission to marry, it was mentioned that he was of the Neptune, while Sarah was "free."[5]

In 1828, Charles, aged 28, who had arrived on the 'Neptune' as a convict and had a life sentence, was living in Sydney with his wife Sarah, born in the Colony, and children Susannah, aged 7, Harriet aged 5, and Henry aged 1. He was working as a 'Taylor' (sic) for Mary Anderson. [6]

He died on 28 March 1848 at the Woolpack Inn, Petersham, aged 51. He was a publican (pub owner).[7][8]

DIED. On the 28th March, at the Woolpack Inn, Petersham, Mr. Charles Hughes, after a short but painful illness, leaving a kind wife and large family to lament their loss. [9]

Charles was listed as a licensed victualler (able to sell alchohol) living in Petersham, New South Wales, when his probate was filed.[10] His heirs and executors were listed as Thomas Shaw, William Henry Hughes, Charles Hughes, Louisa Hughes, William Hughes, Thomas Hughes, George Hughes, Sarah Oliver Or Sarah Hughes. Additional mentions were of Thomas Shaw, William Hughes, Thomas Hughes, George Hughes, and Sarah Oliver. Nicholas Newnham (1819-1875) and his wife Harriet were granted a cottage. Research Notes

There were several Charles Hughes from Middlesex listed as sailing on a convict ship in 1817

  1. Charles Hughes b. 1796 Tailor, pardoned 1834
  2. Charles Hughes b. 1798 Labour and butcher, pardoned 1834
  3. Charles Hughes b. 1798 Seaman, pardoned 1840

There needs to be more research to confirm his birth/baptism. One possibility considered is Charles baptized 30 Apr 1797 in St. James, Westminster, Middlesex, England, but nothing in his Australian records gives that precise of a birth location.
