Susannah was born in 1826 in Huby, Wistow, Whetstone in Yorskshire or

Although there is a marriage record dated 1860, she continued to use Jowitt as her surname, as evident in the 1861 and 1871 (Jowell) and 1891census ^[1]

Susannah had three children John Gambles Clarkson Rose Mary Jowitt and Eliza Louisa Jowitt

John Gambles Clarkson was born in Eccup, Yorkshire in 1947 ^[4]

Rose Mary was born in Buslingthorpe, Leeds, in 1850 ^[5] [1]

Buslingthorpe is an area of Leeds about one mile north of the city centre and currently falls within the Hyde Park and Woodhouse ward of the City of Leeds Council. Much of the housing in the area was demolished by slum clearance in the 1950s [2]

Eliza Louisa, was born in Otley in 1860 ^[6]

In 1861 Susanna, her son and two daughters, were living West Gate (Westgate), Otley ^[7] Susanna's occupation at this time is Charwoman - Widowed, John G Clarkson is an agricultural labourer, Rose Mary is a Schlolar, and Eliza Louisa is an infant.

The 1871 census lists Susaannah and Eliza Louisa's surnames as Jowell. John G Clarkson is still in the household, now listed as a Joiner. Susannah is now a laundress and still listed as widowed.

in 1891 Susannah was living with her daughter and son-in-law John Nelson in North Street, Otley, Yorkshire ^[8] [3]

Susannah died in Wharfedale, probably Otley, in 1897 ^[9] also ^[10]

Research Notes

In the 1851census Susannah's birthplace is listed as Whetstone, Yorkshire. The only Whetstone I can find is Whetstone Gill near Skipton, North Yorshire.

At this time she is listed as being the wife of James Tarvitt. Also listed in the household are a daughter Mary Tarvitt and son John G Clarkson

In the 1861 census, Susannah's birthplace is listed as Huby, Yorkshire. There are two Hubys in Yorkshire, one in Leeds, near Otley, and one near Sutton on the Frorest, York

Mary Tarvitt in the 1851 census appears to become Rose Mary Jowitt in the 1861 census

In the 1871 census, Susannah's birthplace is listed as being Wistow, Yorkshire, which is near Selby

Although there appears to be a marriage record for Susannah Jowitt, Otley, Yorkshire, in 1860, which lists possible spouses as Joseph Brown or Alfred Oldfield, Susannah is still listed as widowed in the 1861 1871 and 1891 (1891 in the household of John Nelson) census

There is no mention of Susannah's husband in the 1861 1871 or 1891 census, and she is listed as Widowed in all three

1871 census data shows Susannah, Eliza Louisa and John G Clarkson are still residents together in Otley. Rose Mary is not listed but, as she would now be 20 years old, she will most likely have started a relationship and moved elsewhere
