Serena Hale Gilman was born on 10 March 1856 in New York City, New York, United States, daughter of Winthrop Sargent Gilman (1808 - >1884) and Abia Swift Lippincott (1817 - 1902). She was christened on 9 November 1856 in Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York, New York[1].
