Biography

Amelia (Minnie) was born in Nottingham on 24 November 1896 [1] to parents Elijah Waplington (abt.1861-1926) and Amelia Ada Gadsby (1864-1936).

In 1901 she was living in Needle Row, Nottingham with her Father, a Hawker, her Mother, a Housewife, 3 brothers: William (b.1889), Ebenezer (b. 1894) and Elijah (b.1900) and her sister, Ann (b.1892).[2]

In 1911, Amelia, by then aged 15, was working as a Lace Dresser. Her mother was a Lace Hand and her Father was recorded more specifically as a Fish Hawker. They lived in Herbert Street, Nottingham. [3]

On 2 September 1919, she gave birth to a Son, Douglas George (Waplington) Gibbins (1919-1984) and the Mother's name on his birth certificate was recorded as Minnie Waplington, a Lace Dresser, by then living at 2 Stretton Street, Nottingham. [4] This was likely the home of her Grandparents, Elijah and Ann Waplington, who lived there in 1881, but moved to Needle Row by 1901, perhaps because they had given up their home to their Son, Elijah and his Wife, Amelia and taken their former property on Needle Row in some kind of 'house swap', which was probably quite common at the time, as expanding families needed more space while the older generation downsized.[5] [6] It is likely that Minnie met George in Stretton Street, as that was given as the location of his employer at the time of the 1921 census.[7]

Douglas' original birth certificate did not contain any record of his father but his birth was re-registered with the surname Gibbins, by authority of the Registrar General No 395 of the Nottingham East District, on 1 November 1952.[8]

In 1921, aged 24, Minnie was a Ticketer Lace, working for Wright Finishing Co Ltd and still living at 2 Stretton Street with her Mother, Father (by then a Labourer for the Railway Engineers), Sister, Ann and Brother, Elijah, as well as Douglas, then aged 1 year 9 months. [9][10][11] On the 1921 census, Douglas was recorded as being the Nephew of the Head of the Household even though he was actually his Grandson. There were 3 other boys also living with the family at that time: Alfred (aged 7), John (5) and Arthur Waplington (5), who were also recorded as Elijah Snr's Nephews but were in fact the sons of Minnie's Brother, Ebenezer and his Wife, Rosina (nee Marsden), as Ebenezer was in Military Service at that time [12] [13] and according to Electoral Roll records, did not return until 1922. [14]. Perhaps Minnie's brother, Elijah Jnr completed the census return on his Father's behalf and forgot that he was supposed to write the relationship to the Head of the Household (Elijah Snr), not his own relationship to each household member on the form. The other household members are however recorded correctly.

Minnie married George Frederick Gibbins (1873-1957) on 20 September 1924. [15], following the death of George's first Wife, Florence on 22 July 1924.

At some point after George's death in 1957 [16], Minnie moved to a bunaglow in Miletree Court, Leighton Buzzard, Buckinghamshire, close to where Douglas had moved with his Wife Nancy Mary (Newman) Gibbins (1918-2008) in c. 1953. [17]

She later moved to Candlefield Close in Hemel Hempstead to be closer to Nancy, who had moved in with her Daughter Jean Mary (Gibbins) O'Brien (1947-2020), Son-in-Law, Terence (Mills West) O'Brien and Grandaughter, Danielle (O'Brien) Downs following Douglas' death in 1984. [18]

Minnie died in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire on 6 August 1994. [19]
