James Dewey Leyde was born on 18 May 1898 in Howard Lake, Wright, Minnesota, United States. The twin of Adella May Leyde, he was the son of Gleason Leyde and Lizzie Tooley.[1][2][3]

In the 1900 census Dewey (age 2) was the son of G.F. Lyde in Middleville Township (north half), Wright, Minnesota, United States.[4]

James Dewey and his twin sister, Adele May, were two of six children put up for adoption by their parents, Gleason Fillmore Leyde and Lizzy Tooley, around 1904. James and Adele were adopted together by William W. Barrett (1860-1929) and Libby J. Ambler Barrett (1856-1936) of Shelton, Mason County, Washington. In the 1910 census James (age 11) was the son of William W Barrett in Shelton, Mason, Washington, United States.[5]

Electrician 2nd Class James Dewey Barrett served in the United States Navy during WWI from 2 May 1917 to 24 April 1919.[2][3][6]

James Dewey Barrett married Vera Charlotte Winters (1905-1990) on 28 May 1927 in King, Washington.[8] They were the parents of:

By 1935 James and his new family had moved to Rexburg, Idaho. James got a job working as a bookkeeper at a cold storage plant. He later became a Bookkeeper at a floral shop as well as a bookkeeper at a dress shop. In the 1940 census James was the head of household in Ward 3, Rexburg, Rexburg Election Precinct 3, Madison, Idaho, United States.[11][12]

Sarlin-3 Ray Sarlin
Leyde-91 and Barrett-14108 appear to represent the same person because: The proper LNAB is Leyde. He was put up for adoption by his father (my great-grandfather) and his mother (my GGF's wife at the time) along with three other children. He was adopted by the Barretts and used that last name thereafter. This is something of a one-time family scandal and my GGF later committed suicide (not from these adoptions per se but an accumulation of things).
