Ngengi was born about 1866 in Ng'enda, Usultani wa Zanzibar, now located in present-day Kenya. He was the younger of two sons of Kongo wa Magana. After the death of his older brother Mūigai, Mūigai's wife, Wambūi, was passed to Ngengi by the traditional inheritance rules of the Kikuyu people. Wambūi bore Ngengi a son, who was named Mūigai after his deceased uncle.
Ngengi was described as a "harsh" man concerning his relationship with his wife and son, and Wambūi is said to have eventually left him to rejoin her family.
Ngengi is believed to have died in 1961, at age 95.
