Biography

George Smeigh was probably born about 1782, probably in Maryland.[1]

By 1850, he was found in Carroll Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. His age was given as 65 and his birthplace as Maryland. His occupation was given as farmer. The household also included:

  • Rebecca Smeigh (age 53)
  • Jane Wax (age 11)

The head of the neighboring household was given as William Smeigh (age 28), a farmer, with Susanah (age 26) and George (age 1).[2]

In 1860, George Smeigh Sr. was still living in Carroll Township, Perry County. His age was given as 76. His occupation was listed as laborer. The household also included:

  • Rebecca Smeigh (age 62)
  • Jane Wax (age 21)

The head of the family next door was George Smeigh Jr. (age 45), a farmer, with Catherine (age 35), Frances Harriett (age 19), Samuel A. (age 9), Sarah E. (age 7) and John C. (age 4).[3]

George Smeigh (Sr.) died 19 April 1865 and was buried in Union Cemetery, Bloomfield, Perry, Pennsylvania.[4]

Research Notes

  • Further research is needed to locate birth and/or christening information for George.
  • Marriage records for George Smeigh should be located. Preliminary research indicates that George was married twice, and that his first wife was Maria Magdalena Messimer. More research is needed.
  • Another clue states that he later married Rebecca Holman Wax (or Wox). More research is needed to verify this.
  • In 1850, George Smeigh was living next to William Smeigh, a farmer, presumably a son of George, but this is not verified. Records should be located to determine their possible relationship.
  • In 1860, George was listed as George Smeigh Sr., with a George Smeigh Jr., a farmer next door. It is likely this man is also a son of George Smeigh Sr., but records should be obtained to verify the relationship.
  • Based on the records found so far, it appears that George and some of his descendants consistently used the spelling Smeigh. Others in the family transitioned to the spelling Smee. Other spellings such as Schmeig, may also apply to the relatives of these people.
