Biography

Joseph was born in 1874. He is the son of Joseph Latham and Susan Griggs.

APPLE-HOUSE AND MOTOR-CAR DESTROYED BY FIRE.
An apple-house and an adjoining shed, containing a motor-car and quantity of accessories, situate in Knight's-road, Huonville, and belonging to Mr. Joseph Hector James Latham, of thatl township, were completely destroyed by fire on Saturday evening.
About 6.30 p.m. Mr. Latham was engaged in vulcanising the insets of his motor-car, and had a little benzine burning in the vulcaniser, when the rubber tubing caught fire. He tried to pull the tubing away from the car, and in doing so slightly burnt his hands. There must have been a leak in the petrol tank, however, for this immediately burst into flames, and instantly the whole car was ablaze.
The luckless owner and his wife, who was with him at the time, did all they could to subdue the flames by throwing water on them, but the task was hopeless from the first, and not only was the motor-car completely destroyed, but the apple-house and shed also perished.
The car, a Ford, was insured for £125, and the building for £60, both with the South British Insurnace Company.
In addition. Mr. Latham lost about £50 worth of motor lubes and tires, which were not covered by insurance. The fire, occurred about a mile outside the township, but Trooper Turnbull, of Huonville, was quickly on the spot, and rendered all the assistance that was possible.
