Mary was born in March, Cambridgeshire and baptised on 26 August 1821 before her first birthday in the village of Eye, Northamptonshire, England. She was the daughter of Robert Laxton, a farmer and publican, and Alice Little.
Mary married twice. Her first husband was Manton Burbidge from Glinton, Northants. Mary and Manton were married on 9 June 1849 in Eye. Their marriage was a short one. Manton died in 1851, aged 32, and was buried on 27 March in Glinton. A daughter, Mary Manton Burbidge, was born in the same year that her father died. Her birth was recorded in the second quarter of 1851 suggesting that her father may not have lived to see her.
Mary's second husband was Charles Apthorp Wheelwright, son of the Reverend Charles Apthorp Wheelwright from Tansor, Northants and a widower. Mary and Charles were married in Tottenham, Middlesex, on 27 March 1859. Charles had been a lieutenant in the Bengal Artillery but was retired when he and Mary were wed. Charles died on 4 April 1867 in Auckland, New Zealand. Sadly, his cause of death was attributed by the coroner to excessive drinking. Mary does not appear to have been with him in New Zealand but his will names Mary as the only beneficiary. It appears Charles was in New Zealand to serve in the militia (Waikato and Tuaranga) during the later stages of the New Zealand Wars (1845-1886).
According to census data for 1871 and 1881, Mary worked in Walton on Thames, Surrey, as a servant to Anne Ingram, Proprietor of the London Evening News, and her two sons who were the editor and sub-editor. Mary was still working as a housekeeper when she was 70. It looks very much like she did not have Charles's pension to live on.
Mary passed away on 17 February 1896 in Walton on Thames. She had been a widow since 1867.
Research Note
To date, Mary has not been located in any England census before 1871. It is not known whether Mary had any children by her second husband.Eady-184 15:14, 23 April 2023 (UTC)
