Emily was born in 1818 and died in 1905. Findagrave shows Emily's parents as William Hughes (1790–1838) and Margaret Cooper Hughes (1802–1871) and first husband as James Shields (1815-1847). William Hughes is buried at the Robertson Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery, Charlestown, Clark County, Indiana; Margaret Cooper Hughes is buried at the Lexington Cemetery, Scott County, Indiana per findagrave. No burial location is found for James Shields.
