John was born about 1839 in Ohio.
John married Maria Jones in 27 November 1862 in Ross County, Ohio.[1][2]
John was a farmer when he enlisted in the Union Army in Jackson, Ohio He served as a Private in Company B of the 5th Regiment, U.S. Colored Infantry until his death in a military hospital in Hampton, Virginia in July 1864 from wounds received in battle.
John was buried in Hampton National Cemetery in Hampton, Virginia.[3][4]
John's widow Maria applied for and received a widow's pension based on his Civil War service. She married again in 1875 in Pike County, Ohio to Samuel Lemons.[2][5]
Research Notes
There were some discrepancies in John's military file as to whether he died in June or July. The official determination was that he died on 14 Jul 1864.
