Biography

Eli F. Mayes was born on 15 Sept. 1857 in Grainger County, Tennessee to James L. Mayes and Martha McDaniel.^[1]

He married Alice Shultze on 2 May 1875 in Knox County, Tennessee.^[2] They had six children:

1. James Nelson (b. 22 Jan 1876)
2. Lucile Sarah (b. 12 Apr 1878)
3. Clara Dora (b. Jun 1881)
4. Bessie G. (b. Apr 1884)
5. Lillian B. (b. 9 Dec. 1886)
6. Ruth Nora (b. Aug 1889)

His marriage to Alice was not especially stable. In June 1900, she is living with their daughters and a grandson in Chattanooga, and the census lists her as "widowed." Eli is living with their son James in Bristol, Tennessee.^[3] However, by 1910 they have reunited and are living together in Atlanta, Georgia with two of their married daughters.

Eli died on 11 Sept 1913 in Atlanta. He obituary notes that he left a wife and six children: J.N. May, Mrs. R.M. Marshall, Mrs. Clara Snodgrass, Mrs. L.E. Gallohan, Mrs. Chas. Godsey, & Mrs. W.B. Burch. ^[4] He is buried in Westview Cemetery. ^[5]
