Edwin (Lefever de la Ossa) Lefèvre was born in Panama.

Edwin was born 23 Jan 1871, in Colón, Colombia (now the Republic of Panama). He was the son of Henry Lefèvre and Emilia Luísa María Santiago de la Ossa Escobar.

Edwin attended Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where he received training as a mining engineer. At the age of nineteen, however, he began his career as a journalist and eventually became a stockbroker, as well. Following his father's death in 1899, Edwin inherited some wealth and became an independent investor.

While living in Hartsdale, New York, a collection of his short stories were published (1901) under the title, Wall Street Stories. This was followed by several novels about money and finance.

In 1908, Edwin and his wife, Martha, moved with their children to a country estate in East Dorset, Vermont.

In 1909, he was appointed ambassador to Spain and Italy by his native country, Panama.

Upon return to the United States, Edwin did work as a broker on Wall Street and was the financial writer for the New York Sun newspaper. He later returned to his home in Vermont where he resumed his literary work, providing short stories for magazines and writing novels. In 1922 and 1923, he published a series of twelve articles in The Saturday Evening Post. Written as the fictional account of a professional Wall Street stock trader, the work is generally accepted as a biography of stock market whiz, Jesse Livermore. Compiled in book format as Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, the work is today considered a classic of American business writing. In all, Edwin wrote eight books related to the world of investing.

Upon his death in 1943, Edwin's estate in Dorset, Vermont was passed to his widow and then to his eldest son, Edwin Lefèvre, Jr. (b. 1902), who completely restored it in 1968. The home is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Edwin's second son, Reid Lefèvre (b. 1904), was the founder of the traveling carnival known as the "King Reid Show" and was also a politician, elected to the Vermont General Assembly, serving as both a member of the House of Representatives from 1947 to 1959 and then the state Senate from 1961 to 1963.
