Thankful Alling was born on the 12th of October 1755,[1][2] most likely in New Haven, Connecticut.[3] She was the daughter of John and Abiah (Hitchcock) Alling.[4] Thankful married Nathaniel Mix on the 9th of February 1772 in New Haven.[5] They had four children together: Lois, Jesse, Eli and Sally.[6] Tragedy struck the family, as Nathaniel died in 1781, at the age of thirty-two. Thankful was left to raise the children on her own.
Nathaniel Mix was ill during the Revolution but he made contributions of money for the Patriots. Was a volunteer at the 1779 invasion by Tryon. [7]
Instead of taking a new husband, which was common at the time, Thankful finished raising the children on her own. It wasn't until she was thirty-eight years old that the widow Thankful remarried.[8] Her four children would have been almost of age; and her new husband Rutherford Trowbridge[9] would have been there to help her finish guiding them into adulthood. This marriage, however, may have been shorter than her first one, as Thankful was listed as the head of household in 1800.[10] In the household with her was one male under ten, one male 10-15, one male 16-25 (Eli), and one female 10-15. As she had married Rutherford seven years before, and Nathaniel had died nineteen years before; it is unknown who the other children in the household were fathered by.
Thankful passed away on the 8th of August 1831, at the age of seventy-five.[11][12][13][14][15] Her husband Rutherford had predeceased her by six years.[16] Thankful was laid to rest in the Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven.[17][18]
