James M. Maness was born in about 26 Aug 1842 in North Carolina, United States, son of Tyson George Maness (1808–1868) and possibly Agness Marsh (1813–1889).^[1]

James married Elizabeth or Betty Patterson (born in 1841 in Chester County, Tennessee, USA). Their son was George Amos Maness (1879–1967).

James died in 1904 in Greenfield, Weakley, Tennessee, United States, aged 60. He was buried in Patterson Cemetery, Greenfield, Weakley County, Tennessee.^[1]

Research Notes

His earliest record found, the 1850 census, lists him as being born in 1842. This year is changed a number of times, and he is listed in 1900 as being born Aug 1843. His gravestone shows 1843, but the date on the memorial is 26 Aug 1842. This is only important as descendants of his share more DNA with other "distant" Maness cousins that seems possible if his only Maness tie is his father, Tyson George Maness. If he was born in 1842, and Tyson and Agnes married in 1842, it is possible that his mother died in childbirth, and might have also been from a Maness line. This would help explain the "3rd cousin" range of relationship to one of his descendants with a cousin who shows only 7th cousin range with the line that has been established for Tyson. Also, Tyson and his family end up in Chester County, TN where William Nathan Maness' family settles (William Nathan is the ancestor of the DNA match in question). Thus, these two families seem more closely tied. It's also possible that James's wife Elizabeth Patterson is actually also from one of the West Tennessee Maness families.
