Biography

John Mackay was born in Scotland.

John Mackay was born around 1787 in Halkirk, Caithness, Scotland^[1], the son of William Mackay and his wife, Janet.^[1] He was a farmer, cultivating a 4-acre plot of land in “Forsie,”^[2][3][4][5] probably, Forss, Highland, Scotland, “a small hamlet” near Halkirk. On 4 Aug 1820, he married Margaret Gunn in Halkirk.^[6] They had one child, Margaret Mackay, born before 24 Mar 1821 also in Halkirk.^[7][8] She married George Campbell, and they had a daughter, Janet^[9][10], who along with her husband, John Mcdonald^[11][12], migrated to Australia. John Mackay died on 30 Mar 1860, in Halkirk.^[1]

1. Date of Birth is a rough estimate, based on John's age on his death record.
2. According to his death record, his mother's maiden surname was Mackay. A record was found for the marriage of William Mackay and Janet Mackay on March 22, 1787, in the nearby parish of Reay.^[13] However, no birth records were found for this couple for a child named John.
3. No records for John Mackay's birth, marriage, and death were found at FamilySearch. Find A Grave was also checked but did not yield a cemetery location.
