The Shaffers for the most part seem to have immigrated during the Palatine Migration in 1710. There is a great read you might have already seen titled The Palatines of New York State published by The Palatine Society of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of New York and New England, Inc. This is available online in PDF form without cost and has a very good narrative of how we came thru England to the US and mentions how some of us spread across to different states. Last name was spelled Schaffer everywhere I can find and somehow morphed into Shaffer along the way. My daughter used churches and graveyards in Rhinebeck, New York to trace back to Jost Schaffer who emmigrated in 1710, I would go back as far as you can and then switch to searching the church and burial records in Rhinebeck to see if you can find your connection. Wishing you the best of luck cousin ;)
