Clement Noël Boulanger was born on Christmas Day 1917 in Dover, New Hampshire, United States, to French-Canadian immigrants Aremys Boulanger and Anna Labonte.[1] He grew up a working-class boy in Dover, one of nine children.
Clement turned 12 the year the stock market crashed and was a teenager during the Depression. In 1936 when he was 18, he enlisted in the United States Navy. On the muster role of the U.S.S. Whitney on the last day of 1939, he was listed as a shipfitter 3rd class (metal worker) and was first on the ship in 1936, four months after his enlistment.[2] The census in April 1940 finds him at the naval hospital in San Diego for reasons unknown.[3]
Following his discharge, he worked at the Portsmouth navy yard as a shipfitter. In 1942 in Dover, he married Doris Evelyn Gillis, a registered nurse, daughter of Sydney Leon Gillis and Laura Larochelle.[4] They had two children.[5] Clement and Doris separated in 1966.
Clement worked as a shipfitter at the navy yard until his untimely death in 1970 at age 52.[6] His body was interred at St. Charles cemetery in Dover.[7]
