Biography

Daniel was born in 1814. He was the son of Daniel Buck and Elizabeth Belden. Daniel's wife was Mary Elizabeth Imlay/Inslay (1819–1862) and they were the parents of at least five children, with at least three of whom served the Union Army during the American Civil War:

  1. Daniel Winthrop Buck (1840-1863) - died of disease in the Civil War.
  2. William Imlay/Inslay Buck (1842-1908) - served during the Civil War in the same unit as his brother Frederick.
  3. Frederick Clarence Buck (1843-1905) - awarded the Medal of Honor during the Civil War.
  4. Charles Ezekiel Buck (1845-Aft 1896)
  5. Mary Elizabeth Buck (29 Dec 1847 to 1914)

Via the various brief obituaries of Daniel found in Find A Grave and elsewhere, he was a mining executive and owner, secretary for mining and insurance companies, and had business (and mine) interests in California and Arizona.

From a genealogy perspective, Daniel's obituaries state that "He was a descendant from the original Pilgrim stock, for his ancestors landed from the Mayflower at Plymouth Rock, and the full record of the family is preserved in R.R. Himmes' catalogue of the "First Puritan Settlers."" However, a search of possible Mayflower Passenger ancestors was inconclusive using Wikitree's Featured Connections tools. What was found regarding Daniel is that he is a direct descendant of significant founders and settlers related to the epic "Great Migration", where their historical significance matches that of the Mayflower Passengers who are "now" absent from his genealogy:

  • Gov. John Winthrop (1587-1649) - Founder of Massachusetts Bay Colony, he led the first large wave of colonists from England in 1630 called the "Winthrop Fleet". Served as governor for 12 of the colony's first 20 years.
  • Gov. John Winthrop II (1606-1676) - An early governor of the Connecticut Colony, and he played a large role in the merger of several separate settlements into the unified colony.
  • Gov. Thomas Dudley (bef.1576-1653) - Helped establish the Massachusetts Bay Colony and served as its governor four times.

Daniel died in 1892.
