Biography

Born: Martha Oakes was born May 6, 1860 to Hiram David Oakes and Chloe Shofner.^[1]

In 1860, Martha S. Oakes (an infant) was living with her presumed parents and siblings in Metcalfe, Kentucky. ^[2] Martha S. Oakes was with the same family in the 1870 US Census.^[3]

Married: Martha married Daniel T. Neagles on 3 June 1878 in Metcalfe, Kentucky. The witnesses were J. W. Hubbard (brother in aw of bride) and W.S.Neagles (father of groom). The groom was 28 years old and the bride 19 years old. Request for license by W.S. Neagles and Margaret A. Neagles.^{[4][5] [6]}

Death: Martha died on November 17, 1916^[1] and was buried at the Coral Ridge Cemetery, Fairdale, Jefferson County, Kentuck.^[7]

Research Notes

Martha's death certificate states her father was Hiram Oakes and her mother was Martha Shoffner, but the only Martha Shofner who married an Oakes was Chloe Shofner's sister Martha Jane Shofner who married Hiram's brother Jacob Roman Oakes.

FindAGrave, without sources, has Martha's father as Hiram Roman Oakes (son of Jacob Roman Oakes and Martha Jane Shofner). Hiram Roman Oakes married Nancy Morris and later San Francisco “Fannie” Warf Morgan.

The death certificate and FindAGrave entries are likely incorrect based upon the presence of this "Martha S. Oakes" in the home of Hiram and Chloe Oakes in the 1860 and 1870 Census.

Note also that J.W. Hubbard, the husband of Martha's sister Nancy Oakes, was a witness to the wedding of Martha S. Oakes and Daniel T. Neagles. Martha's father, Hiram, had died a few months before the wedding.
