Biography

William A. Ruel was born Joseph Fred William Ruel in 1900 in Somersworth, New Hampshire, to Frank Deschenes and Alice Ruel.^[1]

In 1918 when William registered for the draft, he said that he was a student at the University of Vermont, the first in his family to go to college.^[2] In 1925, he was ordained a Catholic priest in Manchester, New Hampshire. (citation needed)

The 1930 census found him posted to a parish in Price, Utah.^[3]

By 1940, he had been taken ill.^[4] He died in Somersworth the following year. The cause of death was cirrhosis of the liver.^[5] His niece in private communication said that the cirrhosis was caused by high levels of copper in the water where he lived in Utah. "Father Bill" was buried in Mount Calvaire Cemetery in Somersworth.^[6]
