Robert Joel Adams was the son of Joel Adams jr. and Mary Goodwyn Hopkins. Unable to attend college because of ill health, he engaged in cotton farming in Lower Richland County, South Carolina. In 1842 he married Mary Anne Bynum. They had three children before she died of tuberculosis in 1846 and he died of tuberculosis in 1848. His estate was left equally for the benefit of the three children when they became of age. The children were raised by their grandparents, Joel Adams Jr. and Mary Goodwyn Hopkins on Elm Savannah Plantation.
