Biography

Thomas Chipchase was born in Shoreditch, Middlesex, England.

Thomas Ambrose Chipchase (1877-1943) was born on the 14th January 1877 ^{[1] [2]} in Shoreditch, London ^[3] (possibly Hackney Road). ^[4] He was the son of a boot and shoemaker, Joseph Luke Chipchase ^[1] and Elizabeth Edmonds ^[3] who lived in Bow in the 1881 census on Usher Road. ^[5]

Before 1883 they moved to Old Ford Road and Thomas was enrolled at Atley Road School in Bow ^[1] and in 1886, still living on Old Ford Road, he, along with younger brother Frank, transferred to Monteith Road School nearby (although father's forename recorded incorrectly). ^[6] The 1891 census showed the family in residence at Old Ford Road. ^[7]
He left school soon after and in the 1901 census was boarding in West Ham on Arthingworth Street and was employed as a house painter. ^[4]

He married in West Ham the following year to Bertha Ann Vale on the 29th March at All Saints' Church. ^{[8] [9]}

They started their family the following year with Thomas junior. ^[10] In the 1911 census the family lived on Humberstone Road, Plaistow and Thomas was working as a machine minder at a printing firm. ^[12] Shortly after the census another son, Frederick, was born. ^[11] They remained in the area but moved to Abbott's Road before 1921 when Thomas was still employed as a printer's machine minder and their family was now complete. ^[13]

Abbotts Road would be their home for the next 20 years and more. At the start of WW2 Thomas was still listed as a printer's machine minder but was shown as incapacitated, possibly for some years. ^[2]

He was still resident there when he died at Hill End Hospital in St Albans on the 8th May 1943. ^{[14] [15]}
