Biography

Gilbert was the second son of Henry Wharton and Elizabeth Musgrave of Wharton, Westmorland and Croglin, Cumberland.[1][2]

He married Joan, said to be the heiress of Kirkby Thore, Westmorland.[1][2] Her parentage is uncertain, but in 1435, as Joanna, widow of Gilbert Wherton, she was holding Kirkby Thore along with Robert Kirkeby.[3] They had children:

  • John [1][2]
  • Edward, rector of Wharton [1][2]
  • William [2]
  • Henry, rector of Kirkby Thore [2]

Gilbert Wharton was dead by 1435, when his wife Joanna was called his widow.[3]

Research Notes

The early pedigree of the Whartons of Kirkby Thore is somewhat confused in Nicolson and Burn. Gilbert is listed there as the son of John, rather than the other way around.[4]

Unknown Wharton previously connected here as his daughter has been removed. She is said to have been born in 1444 and her husband to have been born in 1455, but this Gilbert Wharton was dead by 1435.
