Hi, I've added William's birth record above showing he was born with surnmae Oldman, mother's maiden name Finch. Please can you add his last name at birth or add me to the trusted list so I can do so? Any idea why his name was Vail on his marriage record?
Mother's maiden name is Finch, however, I don't believe she was married to William Sinclair Oldman. He was just the father of William Charles Oldman and Dorothy reported herself as Oldman on William Charles' birth certificate. Dorothy was married to William Henry Vail, in Coventry which is where the Vail name came from. William Charles (Oldman) Vail declared to a solicitor in the 70s that he was born in Newmarket to William Sinclair Oldman but that he'd only ever been known under the surname Vail. I don't know if he was ever formally adopted by William H Vail but Dorothy died when he was 10 and William H Vail next pops up in census records as being back in Devon where he was born.
Thanks so much for this information, I have removed the marriage between Dorothy and William Sinclair, but kept them both as parents of William Charles. The only thing I don't understand is that Dorothy married William Henry Vail in 1917 but William Charles wasn't born until 1920.
There must have been a breakdown in the marriage between Dorothy and William H Vail prior to 1920 though there may have been some rekindling. There is a birth record in Coventry in 1922 for a Vail with mum's maiden name as Finch... and a death record for the same child not long after. In addition, William H Vail is also on an outbound passengers list to Sydney, Australia (William H's sister was there) in the early 1920s (sorry can't find the exact date right now). Dorothy was then imprisoned in 1924 for abandoning William Charles on several occasions. She self reported as a widow but to which William I dont know (Oldman or Vail?) William Charles went to the workhouse whilst his mum was in prison and Dorothy died in 1930 when William Charles was 10.
