Biography

George Washington Polk was born on 12 July 1817, in Raleigh, Wake, North Carolina, United States. He was the son of Colonel William Polk, 59, and Sarah Sophia Hawkins, 33.

George married Sally Leah Hillard (1819-1894) on 24 November 1840 in Williamson, Tennessee, United States.[1] They were the parents of:

  • Capt. James Hilliard Polk (1842–1926)
  • Rufus King Polk (1843–1902)
  • Sallie Hawkins Polk (1845–1914)
  • Mary Murfree Polk (1847–1934)
  • George Brevard Mecklenburg Polk (1849–1877)
  • Susan Spratt Polk (1851–1931)
  • Lucius Junius Polk (1853–1923)
  • Col. Isaac Hilliard Polk Sr (1854–1919)
  • Leonidas Polk (1856–1859)
  • William Hawkins Polk (1859–1896)
  • Carolyn Polk (1861–1951)

The family resided in Maury, Tennessee, United States.[2][3][4][5]

In the 1880 census George (age 62), Farmer, was the married head of household in District 10, Grainger, Tennessee, United States.[6]

George died on 8 January 1892. He was buried in 1892 in Ashwood, Maury, Tennessee, United States.[7]
