Biography

Annie (Boone) Gargus was a Missourian.

Annie was born on September 22, 1869, in Callaway County, Missouri, to Alonzo and Martha Boone. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]

Annie was enumerated for the federal census on August 5, 1870. She was just under 11 months old, and was living with parents Alonzo and Martha, and siblings Martha, John, Emma, George, Delia, Richard, Samuel, Arthur, and Lillie, in Nine Mile Prairie Township, Callaway County, Missouri. [1]

On the 1876 Missouri census, Annie was living in Nine Mile Prairie Township, Callaway County, Missouri. [9]

Annie has not yet been located on the 1880 census. Annie stated in a 1955 diary entry that after her mother died in 1873, her father was not able to take care of all the children and that she often lived with other people, so it's unclear who she might have been living with at this time. [7]

On February 11, 1886, Annie was married to Martin Warehime in Williamsburg, Missouri, when she was 16 years old. According to depositions given to the pension board, this was something of a shotgun wedding; Martin testified that he was forced to marry Annie after Alonzo had him arrested by her half-brother Charles Jackson, who was a constable, for non-support of the child she was pregnant with. Martin claimed the child was not his and that he was being framed to protect a wealthy man in town who was the real father; he said that he never wanted to marry Annie and abandoned her within days of the wedding to move west to Kansas. He even told his family that Annie was a prostitute. This marriage caused Annie many problems, because since they were never formally divorced, her marriage to Mathias Gargus later was not considered legal and she was denied his civil war pension. As for the paternity of the child, who she also named Martin, she continued to say for the rest of her life that the child was his. Her second husband, Mathias, informally adopted the younger Martin and gave him his last name, so he was always known as Martin Gargus. [7] [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16]

Annie's sister Lillie married Mathias Gargus, but died in 1886. Following Lillie's death, Annie was married to Mathias on November 6, 1887, in Readsville, Missouri. [11]

Annie was enumerated for the federal census on June 20, 1900. She was 30 years old at this time, and was living with husband Mathias, and sons Martin, Clarence, John, Mathias, Earl, and Pearl, in Linn, Missouri. She was noted to be able to read and write. [2]

After Mathias's death, Annie was involved in a relationship with Logan Pointer which led to the birth of her son Logan. She said in her deposition that Logan promised to marry her, but they were never married. [11]

Annie was enumerated for the federal census on April 16, 1910. She was 40 years old at this time, and was living with sons Clarence, John, Mathias, Earl, Ulysses, and Logan, in Bland, Missouri. [3]

Annie was enumerated for the federal census on January 12, 1920. She was 50 years old at this time, and was living with sons Earl, Pearl, and Logan, and Pearl's wife Anna, in Sullivan, Missouri. [4]

Annie has not yet been found on the 1930 census.

In 1935, Annie was inferred to be living in Sullivan, Missouri. [5]

Annie was enumerated for the federal census on May 3, 1940. She was 70 years old at this time, and was living with John Stuart and his sister-in-law, Iris Baker, in Sullivan, Missouri, as a helper. She was noted to have a 3rd grade education. [5]

Annie was enumerated for the federal census on April 19, 1950. She was 80 years old at this time, and was living in Sullivan, Missouri. [6]

Annie died on May 3, 1963, in Sullivan, Missouri. She was buried on May 6, 1963, in Sullivan IOOF Cemetery. Her cause of death was given as "circulatory collapse due to auricular fibrillations due to myocardial disease," with "cardiac decompensation & hypertrophy" being a contributing factor. [8]
