Tom Smith is a part of US Black heritage.
Tom was enslaved by James Webb Smith in Jackson County, Tennessee, along with his mother Mandy and three siblings: Beaverly, Webb, and Helen.
James wrote his will on 20 February 1854 and died on 22 May 1856. He named 71 enslaved people, including Tom and his mother and two of his siblings (Webb and Helen) who were given to James's son Sydney Smith.
