Family history states that James Gray was born in VA. The 1850 Census records that he was born in GA. The 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census records that he was born in NC. His son, James Gray Jr's death certificate states that his father was born in VA. Both his parents were born and married inVA. His mother remarried in GA in 1844.

J - If your link back to Gray Holloway is correct, which I have no reason to doubt, then there is definitely bouncing around between NC and VA in that family. Particularly Gray's children bounced between Granville Co, NC and Mecklenburg Co, VA in records. Then parts of Granville Co. became Warren Co., NC and later Vance Co., NC. As such I suspect much of their "bouncing around" in NC records was due to border changes instead of actual migrations. Deed mapping in NC might make some sense of this.

Also I posted some records that show William B. Holloway was probated intestate in Morgan Co., GA. There are some more records that I haven't located because the indices are a bit out of whack. James Gray Holloway's share of William B's estate was under guardianship of a man named Ferris G. Anderson. William Perkins and Prudence Perkins (William B. Holloway's remarried widow) had outstanding notes on the estate as of 1847 which helps to confirm the timeline.

Y-DNA descendants of James Gray Holloway would be a good line to test as we already have data from what should prove to be about 4th, 6th and 8th cousins tested in his Y-DNA line if it's correct back to Gray Holloway.

Cheers, Joe
