Hugo Aul survived persecution during the Holocaust.

Hugo Aul, son of Joseph Aul and Fanny (Hess) Aul, was born at 10 p.m. on 19 August 1889 in Gedern, Kreis Schotten, Großherzogtum Hessen, Deutsches Reich.[1][2]

Hugo became a horse dealer and later managed a car rental business.[2]

Hugo Aul married Margarete Lieblich on 19 October 1920 in Osnabrück.[2] They had one son, Ewald, born on 8 April 1926 in Osnabrück.[2]

His wife Margarete died on 27 April 1935 in Osnabrück, Hannover, Preußen, aged 40 years.[2]

As pressure by the fascist German government rose, Hugo was deported to the concentration camp in Sachsenhausen-Oranienburg in August 1938.[2]

During this time, his son Ewald was residing with his maternal grandparents, Levy and Jenny Lieblich. Eventually, Ewald also was deported in December 1941.[2]

Hugo, however, emigrated after his dismissal from the concentration camp in 1938,[2] and finally made his way to the United States where he arrived in New York on 4 March 1941, travelling from Havanna in Cuba on the ship Imperial.[3]

Hugo Aul (age 52) married Laura Guenzburger on 2 August 1942 in New York, Manhattan, New York, New York, USA.[4]

Also in 1942, Hugo Aul was drafted to fight in World War II for the Allies in Buffalo, New York, USA, residing at 637 W. Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, Erie County, New York.[5]

Hugo Aul started his naturalization in 1946.[6]

In the 1950 census, Hugo Aul (age 60), Foreman, was listed with his wife in New York, Queens, New York, USA.[7]
